Internship Opportunity
WEDR- 99 JAMZ PUBLIC AFFAIRS INTERNSHIP

Two non-paid internships are available within the Public Affairs Dept. Students have a hands-on opportunity to build professional skills by assisting in the weekly production of Community Voices (talk show), writing PSAs for weekday Community News scripts and compiling Quarterly Issues and Programs Reports for public files. One internship will focus slightly more on show content and the other will focus more on technical production, but neither will be exclusive.

RESPONSIBILITIES
SHOW PRODUCTION: Once students have been thoroughly briefed on format and procedures and are performing other responsibilities to standards, they will serve as co-hosts and ask approved questions during show tapings
  • Assist in identifying and booking appropriate guests
  • Review topic, visit websites, pull stats, ratings, facts, etc. and submit questions to ask that would be of concern to younger audience members
  • Review and suggest music/lyrics with social commentary that relate to show topics and can be incorporated into show
  • Provide each guest with a name plate, business card and water
  • Review show prep sheet with guests and confirm guest contact info
  • Take notes on key points made during the show to construct a show description for website and reports
  • Remove cups, papers and any other articles left by guests after show taping
  • Assist in breaking down studio equipment
  • Escort guests to and from lobby
  • Monitor website to ensure shows are archived and available for listening on the web
  • Assist in show editing
  • Participate in weekly show evaluation session
QUARTERLY PROGRAMS AND ISSUES REPORTS
  • Conduct interviews with community leaders to determine local issues
  • Monitor news media to help determine developing issues
  • Help sort and compile interview results, issues, show descriptions, news and PSAs
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Read through faxes and mail to help select public service announcements, special projects, public service appearances and interviews relevant to WEDR's general and gospel listeners
  • Assist in writing copy for weekday COMMUNITY NEWS
  • Track each organization and number of PSAs on monthly logs
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
1. Student must be available on Thursdays from 11:30 AM to 5:30PM to assist with show tapings. Must have access to a computer and the internet to receive writing and research assignments.

2. Students must possess excellent writing and telephone skills. They must be reliable, flexible, have a positive attitude and the ability to be self-directed. Knowledge of Adobe Audition a plus.

3. Students must be enrolled in a school or college program for credit hours, preferably as a journalism, public relations, communications arts, broadcasting, radio or TV major. Internships are set up for college credit only and not on a volunteer basis. (No high school internships are available.)

4. Students must provide written permission, signed by a counselor, department head or dean, stating that s/he is approved to take an internship at WEDR 99 JAMZ for the specified term.

5. Students must provide in writing the requirements of their internship set forth by their school or college to achieve a passing grade. This includes the number of weekly or total hours, journals, writing or work samples, evaluations, work experiences, etc.

6. Students must also provide 99 JAMZ with the name and phone number of the staff member at the school or college who is responsible for monitoring their progress during the internship.

7. Students must submit a resume and complete a 99 JAMZ internship application. If they have airchecks, writing samples, voiceover demos or production demos they are also encouraged to submit them.

8. Students should provide a letter of recommendation from a former employer or volunteer experience supervisor.

9. Students living in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area, but attending institutions out of the area are encouraged to apply in advance to allow time to get through the application process and to be interviewed while home on breaks.
